Relay For Life is
the American Cancer Society's signature event. Relay represents
the hope that those lost to cancer will never be forgotten, that
those who face cancer will be supported, and that one day,
cancer will be eliminated.
Unique Overnight Event
Relay For Life is a fun-filled, overnight event that offers
everyone an opportunity to participate in the fight against
cancer. Teams of family members, friends, co-workers and others
join together each year to raise funds for the American Cancer
Society and make a difference in the community. In honor of
those who battle cancer 24 hours a day, team members typically
take turns walking the track throughout the day and night. For
those not walking, there is around-the-clock action to keep
everyone busy. From entertainment, food and games to touching
ceremonies and stories of inspiration, there is something for
everyone at Relay For Life.
Survivorship
Cancer survivors are the heart of Relay For Life events, and
their presence is a powerful declaration that cancer can be
beaten. Each Relay begins with a celebratory lap in which
survivors walk the track as they are cheered on by family,
friends and Relay For Life participants. Caregivers are then
asked to join survivors for a second lap in appreciation of the
vital role they play in the fight against cancer. The survivor
activities continue throughout the evening, giving the
cancer patient in treatment an opportunity to share with others,
and a long-term survivor can provide hope to the newly
diagnosed.
Survivor Stefany Vannatter of West Virginia says, "My first
Relay For Life changed my life forever. I knew from that day
forward that I was part of a special family and that I would
never be alone in my battles again. I was surrounded by love,
hope, and friends and it strengthened my resolve to continue the
fight."
Ceremony of Hope
A special part of every Relay For Life event is the Luminaria
Ceremony which is often referred to as a Ceremony of Hope. It is
a time to remember those we have lost to cancer, to support
those who currently have cancer, and to honor those who have
fought cancer in the past. Traditionally, the ceremony takes
place around dusk, as thousands of luminaria bags are lit one at
a time, slowly illuminating the night sky. Each luminaria is
placed in honor or in memory of someone who has been touched by
cancer, and many are adorned with pictures and personal messages
of inspiration and love. The Luminaria ceremony is a time to
reflect and a time to find hope.
